Medimplant realizes new concepts in the field of cardiovascular implants and focuses on accelerating the process of turning innovative ideas into the development of products.

The Medimplant Center of Competence was one of the winners in a competition to form centers of competence for medical technology by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. Medimplant is a unit of Hannover Medical School.

An animal laboratory was de-merged from the Centre and established as an independent business corporation in December 2001. This laboratory takes on projects for the centre and for third parties. A second split-off, a laboratory for biocompatibility assessments, is currently being set up.

Focal Points at Medimplant:

• Development of degradable implants for heart and vascular patients, for example, stents and occlusion systems based on metallic alloys.
• Development of implants utilising "tissue engineering" methods, e.g. small arteries, occlusion systems and valved venous conduits.
• Economic, health and technological evaluation of implants (Link Project "Socio-Economic assessment")

Strategy

SMEs can profit especially from Medimplant. Smaller businesses cannot usually afford the expense of setting up or expanding independent research technologies targeting product development. Medimplant places not only modern technologies but also examination teams at its clients' disposal in selected areas. The new animal laboratory, which was set up specifically for cardiovascular examinations, and specialised technologies to examine the biocompatibility of implants are part of this strategy.

Structure

The Medimplant Centre of Competence was founded as an independent department of the Hannover Medical School (MHH).

An external Advisory Council provides the Competence Centre with scientific and business expertise.

Following the successful start of Medimplant, it is to be established as an independent business with its own service profile after the second promotional phase in the year 2006. In conjunction with the Animal Laboratory and the Laboratory for Biocompatibility Assessment, the Centre will be able to offer its services nationwide: Towards optimised, compatible and effective implantation therapies.
